Nick Campbell from Greyscale Gorilla walks us though the process of making his personal project from 2005, Conform Non Conform in this free After Effects video tutorial. He shows us his process of using masks to animate simple shapes. Then, using precomping and simple plugins, he warps and distorts the simple shapes into the final animation.

Unsolicited tip: Some of this would be very easily done with Shape Layers animated with Stroke and Trim Paths. Thanks for showing how you work and I’m lookoing forward to watching more of your videos.

btw i’ve always thought of digital compositing as problem solving, rather than just reciting steps. I loved being able to hear your thought process, mistakes, and the way you overcame it (including using google to find out how to spell bezier..nice i do it too haha) as you explained the method to create this awesome animation. I hate how lynda.com just makes you follow the guy

hey nick, this is great. but i have a problem, for some reazon its nor rendering the collapsed stripes.
it only rendes de b.g. and the three lines comps, but no the square ones, ¿ what am i doing wroung? anyone, please help.
